Census update from Government Statistician Geoff Bascand

Statistics New Zealand’s Board today met to continue its work for the Government on alternative 2011 Census options.

Government Statistician Geoff Bascand said the 8 March 2011 Census couldn't go ahead following the 22 February 2011 Christchurch earthquake.

"We're continuing our work and today at our regular weekly Board meeting we further discussed the options as part of the ongoing preparation for providing advice to the Government. Once we've done sufficient work I will make a recommendation to Government. The Government will in due course make a decision on the next census."

The earthquake caused significant damage to Statistics New Zealand buildings in Christchurch.

"We believed a successful census could not be held so soon after the disaster and the weeks following the earthquake were not the right time to be asking New Zealanders to complete their forms," Mr Bascand said.
