What we do to reduce burden on survey participants

We are committed to reducing the burden of our surveys on survey participants. To achieve this we are:

  • reviewing surveys and questions to make sure they are relevant to customer needs
  • replacing surveys, or some questions, with data already collected by Statistics NZ, other government agencies, and the private sector
  • re-using existing data to reduce the number of businesses we survey
  • reducing the burden on some of the very large businesses we survey by working with them to make the supply of data as efficient as possible
  • testing questionnaires to make sure they are easy to understand
  • gradually moving survey questionnaires online
  • providing businesses, where possible, with their preferred option for completing surveys (eg online)
  • ensuring that small, medium, and large businesses are not individually overburdened
  • requesting data for some annual surveys according to the business’ balance sheet date
  • we make sure the value of the information we collect justifies the burden on participants – as part of the ministerial guideline requiring us to seek the Minister of Statistics’ approval for a new or revised survey.
