Quarterly Survey of Retail Trade – information for participants

Why are you carrying out this survey?

The purpose of the Quarterly Survey of Retail Trade is to provide:

  • timely and short-term indicator statistics on the retail industries of the economy
  • quarterly data on the value of sales, stockholding, purchases, salaries and wages, and profits, which feed into measures of New Zealand's GDP
  • information on the level of consumer spending, which is an important indication of confidence in the New Zealand economy.

Who takes part in the survey? How did you select me?

Of the approximately 28,000 retail businesses in New Zealand, 360 are selected to participate in the survey. Businesses are selected based on their complexity and the size of their contribution to the retail industry. The survey includes businesses engaged in selling goods and services to the general public. Retail businesses we survey may:

  • have a physical shop location designed to attract walk-in customers
  • sell goods without a physical shop-front location (eg businesses selling online)
  • sell services (eg hospitality services).

You may be selected to participate in the Quarterly Survey of Retail Trade if we classify your business as being in any of the following industries:

  • supermarket and grocery stores
  • specialised food retailing
  • liquor retailing
  • non-store and commission-based retailing
  • department stores
  • furniture, floor coverings, houseware, and textiles retailing
  • hardware, building, and garden supplies retailing
  • recreational goods retailing
  • clothing, footwear, and accessories retailing
  • electrical and electronic goods retailing
  • pharmaceutical and other store-based retailing
  • accommodation
  • food and beverage services
  • motor vehicle and parts retailing
  • fuel retailing.

Your business is classified based on its predominant activity in terms of sales. Sometimes the way we classify a business is different from how a business describes its activities.

When do you carry out the survey?

The survey is carried out every quarter.

How can I complete the survey questionnaire?

You can complete the survey questionnaire by filling in either the paper or electronic (editable PDF) form.
