Classification criteria

Year of arrival in New Zealand

The criterion used to place a person, born outside of New Zealand, into the classification for year of arrival in New Zealand is the year stated by the respondent.

Years since arrival in New Zealand

The criterion used to place a person, born outside of New Zealand, into the classification for years since arrival in New Zealand is the time elapsed in completed years (including any intervening absences whether short term or long term) between arrival in New Zealand and the data collection.

Classification

Year of arrival in New Zealand

Year of arrival in New Zealand is a flat classification in year categories, starting with the year that occurred 120 years prior to the year of the data collection and finishing with the year of the data collection. For example the 2007 code structure ranges from 1887 to 2007. Excluding residual categories there are 121 categories.

Years since arrival in New Zealand

Years since arrival in New Zealand is a flat classification in year intervals from one year to 96 years. Also categories for 97 or more, less than one year and residual categories. Excluding residual categories there are 98 categories.

Coding process
