Questionnaire module

The questionnaire modules below are examples that meet the requirements documented in the statistical standard. Other questionnaire modules may vary in format but should conform to the requirements contained in this statistical standard.

Requirements

The relationship questionnaire module must:

  • collect the relationship of each person to every other person in the household
  • collect a minimum of level one of the classification, that is, close familial relationships
  • allow for only one relationship to be reported between two members in the household.

For sample surveys, using a relationship matrix, information on the relationship variable can be collected using the following set of questions.

  • In dealing with the respondent's (person 1) relationship, the following question can be asked of the respondent - "What is person 2's [first name][family name] relationship to you?" and so on for all members in the household.
    Example of flowchart question:
In dealing with the respondent's (person 1's) relationship:
"What is person 2's [first name][last name] relationship to you?"

Include birth/biological, step, adopted and other relationships

"So person 2 [first name][last name] is your ..."
The respondent may be given relationship response options from a showcard for the above questions.
  • In dealing with relationships between household members other than the respondent (when relationship is collected by proxy), the following question can be asked of the respondent - "What is person 2's [first name][family name] relationship to person 3 [first name] family name]?" and so on for all members in the household.

    Example of flowchart question:
In dealing with the person 2's relationship to person 3:
"What is person 2's [first name][last name] relationship to person 3 [first name][last name]?"

Include birth/biological, step, adopted and other relationships

"So person 2 [first name][last name] is person 3's [first name][last name]..."
The respondent may be given relationship response options from a showcard for the above questions.
