Standard output

Age

Age is generally stored as single years but can be stored as, for example, five-year groupings (in aggregated forms on confidentialised unit record files (CURFs) to protect the confidentiality of individuals while providing wider access).

Single years

This is a complete classification for age by single years where the output categories are the same as the classification categories.

These standard groupings are not an exhaustive list. Outputs may use different groupings, depending on the data needed, providing that these are still within the intent of the standard.

Date of birth

For birth date: to output data for day and year, use the categories in the classification, for example, day 1, year 1970. To output data for month, however, instead of using the 01 to 12 categories in the classification, use the months they represent (January to December).

The residual categories may be output separately or combined. Where a combination item of residuals is to be used in output, this item should have a label 'not elsewhere included' and a footnote indicating its composition.

The residual categories are defined in Glossary and references.

The full classification is available in Download of classification.
