Key Findings on New Zealand's Progress Using a Sustainable Development Approach: 2010 measures New Zealand’s environmental, economic, and social progress using 16 key indicators. The results of the indicators answer four main questions, based around four key concepts:

  • Meeting needs – how well do we live?
  • Fairness – how well are resources distributed?
  • Efficiency – how efficiently are we using our resources?
  • Preserving resources – what are we leaving behind for our children?

Progress in each of these areas is measured against 16 key indicators. Trends in the indicators illustrate positive or negative changes in relation to sustainable development. Results for indicators span the period since 1987, when the common definition of sustainable development was first adopted by the World Commission on Environment and Development. In general, indicators were selected because there was adequate data available to assess changes since 1987. However, in some cases the period analysed is shorter.

Readers are likely to have their own views as to which indicators could be selected as key indicators. Accordingly, Statistics NZ welcomes feedback on the indicators currently included. All feedback will be taken into account in the next full report.

Key Findings on New Zealand's Progress Using a Sustainable Development Approach: 2010 updates 13 of the 16 key indicators used in Key Findings on New Zealand's Progress Using a Sustainable Development Approach: 2008

Revisions have been made to some of the indicators due to new data becoming available and improvements to methodologies. Details of which indicators have been revised can be found here.

The full report, Measuring New Zealand’s Progress Using a Sustainable Development Approach: 2008, along with the full set of indicators and principles of sustainable development, can be found here.
