In May 2017 compared with May 2016 visitor arrivals were up 15,500 to 209,200.
The biggest changes were in arrivals from:
- Australia (up 9,200)
- United States (up 2,500)
- United Kingdom (up 1,200)
- India (up 1,100)
- China (down 1,500).

Overseas trips by New Zealand residents were up 22,400 to 233,100.
The biggest changes were in departures to:
- Australia (up 3,500)
- United Kingdom (up 2,100)
- Fiji (up 1,800)
- United States (up 1,800)
- Vanuatu (down 1,100).

Permanent and long-term arrivals were up 600 to 8,400.
Permanent and long-term departures were up 500 to 5,300.

In May 2017, seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 5,900 migrants.

In the May 2017 year compared with the May 2016 year:
- visitor arrivals numbered 3.6 million, up 323,200 (10 percent)
- New Zealand residents departed on 2.7 million trips overseas, up 278,500 (11 percent)
- permanent and long-term arrivals were 130,400, up 5,600 (4 percent)
- permanent and long-term departures were 58,400, up 2,000 (4 percent)
- the net gain in migrants was 72,000.
