Key facts

In February 2017 compared with February 2016 visitor arrivals were up 6,700 to 380,000.

The biggest changes were in arrivals from:

  • China (down 19,400)
  • United States (up 10,500)
  • United Kingdom (up 3,300).

Overseas trips by New Zealand residents were up 20,300 to 147,400.

The biggest changes were in departures to:

  • Australia (up 7,500)
  • India (up 1,800)
  • Tonga (down 1,300).

Permanent and long-term arrivals were up 500 to 13,800.

Permanent and long-term departures were up 500 to 5,200.

In February 2017, seasonally adjusted figures showed a net gain of 6,000 migrants.

In the February 2017 year compared with the February 2016 year:

  • visitor arrivals numbered 3.54 million, up 341,400 (11 percent)
  • New Zealand residents departed on 2.66 million trips overseas, up 231,600 (10 percent)
  • permanent and long-term arrivals were 128,800, up 4,600 (4 percent)
  • permanent and long-term departures were 57,500, up 600 (1 percent)
  • net gain in migrants was 71,300.
