Farm types are used in both the design of the Agricultural Production Census and the Agricultural Production Survey, as well as in the output of the resulting statistics. The farm type categories are based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC) used to code industry.
Because there has been a change in the version of ANZSIC used for the design and output of agricultural production statistics, this information paper will help data users interpret the statistics produced.
The ANZSIC 1996 (ANZSIC96) version was used in the design of the 2002 Agricultural Production Census and the 2003 to 2006 agricultural production surveys. The official farm type statistics were produced using this version of the classification.
The ANZSIC 2006 (ANZSIC06) version was adopted for the 2007 Agricultural Production Census with official farm type statistics produced on this basis.
ANZSIC96 data can be produced from the 2007 Agricultural Production Census on an unofficial basis. As well, ANZSIC06 data can be produced on an unofficial basis from the 2002 to 2006 agricultural production collections. For users with time series, this unofficial data will help them assess the impacts of the two industry classifications. Significant differences exist between the two ANZSIC classifications that affect the agriculture sector, including changes to the coding rules used. These are discussed below.
