Tourism Satellite Account – information releases

Note: The 2017 edition of the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) will be released on 13 December 2017, rather than in the third week of October. This is so that we can provide more up-to-date detailed information about the industries and products related to tourism.

The change reflects timeliness improvements to the national accounts, which form the basis of much of the TSA. The annual national accounts will be published on 24 November. Releasing the TSA after this date means we will have two full years’ worth of additional data in the TSA. This change will also lead to changes in the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s (MBIE) release calendar for the monthly regional tourism expenditure estimates, which are updated each year with the latest data from the TSA.

These releases provide a picture of the role tourism plays in New Zealand, including the changing levels and impact of tourism activity, and the industry’s contribution to the economy.

The tourism satellite account is linked to, and consistent with, the existing New Zealand System of National Accounts. The framework used follows international guidelines established by the United Nations World Tourism Organization and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). A satellite account involves rearranging existing information found in the national accounts so an area of particular economic or social importance can be analysed more closely.
