Dwelling consents down in September
Embargoed until 10:45am  –  31 October 2014

Building Consents Issued: September 2014  –  Media Release

Nearly 2,000 new dwellings were consented last month, but there are signs the trend is decreasing, Statistics New Zealand said today.

“The trend for new dwellings was previously at its highest level since August 2007. While it’s now easing, the trend is still about 10 percent higher than at the same time last year,” business indicators manager Neil Kelly said.

In September 2014, the seasonally adjusted number of new dwellings consented decreased by 12 percent. Excluding apartments, this number fell by 10 percent.

In unadjusted terms, 1,985 new dwellings were consented in September (including 262 apartments).

The regions that consented the most new dwellings were:

  • Canterbury – 579 (including 88 apartments)
  • Auckland – 537 (including 59 apartments)
  • Wellington – 193 (including 100 apartments).

Almost $1.3 billion of building work was consented in September, with $778 million of residential work and $484 million of non-residential work.

Data for building consents is obtained from all territorial authorities.
