Home consents remain low in June
Embargoed until 10:45am  –  29 July 2011

Building Consents Issued: June 2011  –  Media Release

In June 2011, the number of new homes authorised fell slightly (1.4 percent), after adjusting for seasonal effects, Statistics New Zealand said today. If the volatile apartment category is excluded, the number of new homes shows a larger fall of 4.5 percent – this follows rises in each of the previous three months.

“As we saw in the May figures, when apartments are excluded, the longer-term trend shows a small increase in homes authorised recently,” industry and labour statistics manager Louise Holmes-Oliver said. “However, while the trend has certainly flattened after a year of decline, it is still not possible to confirm if it has started to rise – at least one more month of positive movement would be necessary.”

In June 2011, compared with June 2010, consents were issued for:

  • 995 new homes, including apartments, down 28 percent
  • 935 new homes, excluding apartments, down 29 percent
  • 60 new apartment units, up 5.3 percent.

In Canterbury, earthquake-related consents totalling $14 million were identified in June 2011 (half the value authorised in May). These included:

  • $8 million of non-residential consents
  • $6 million of residential consents, including eight new dwellings (none were relocatable units).

For the year ended June 2011, the value of non-residential building consents was $3,704 million, down 4.3 percent compared with the previous June year. For more information on monthly, quarterly, and annual building consent statistics, please see Building Consents Issued: June 2011.

Data for building consents is obtained from all territorial authorities.
