Food Price Index: September 2011

Key facts

In September 2011 compared with August 2011:

  • Food prices fell 1.0 percent.
  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 8.6 percent, reflecting seasonally lower vegetable prices. 
  • Grocery food prices fell 0.2 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 0.3 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.2 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 1.3 percent.

From September 2010 to September 2011:

  • Food prices increased 4.7 percent. This includes a 2.2 percent rise in food prices in October 2010, when the rate of goods and services tax (GST) rose from 12.5 to 15 percent.
