Monthly change

Food prices fell 0.8 percent in the October 2016 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices were flat overall.

In October 2016 compared with September 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 5.7 percent (down 0.1 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 0.8 percent.
  • Grocery food prices showed no overall change (down 0.1 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.2 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.1 percent.

Annual change

Food prices increased 0.6 percent in the year to October 2016.

In October 2016 compared with October 2015:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 1.2 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.4 percent.
  • Grocery food prices rose 0.2 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.0 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 2.0 percent.

 Key average prices

  •  Two litres of blue-top milk was $3.31 in October 2016.
  •  A kilo of tomatoes cost $6.83 in October 2016, down from $9.63 in September, and $10.92 in August.
