Embargoed until 10:45am  –  11 November 2011
Key facts

In October 2011 compared with September 2011:

  • Food prices fell 1.3 percent.
  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 6.1 percent, reflecting seasonally lower vegetable prices.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 1.5 percent.
  • Grocery food prices fell 0.3 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 0.9 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.1 percent.

From October 2010 to October 2011:

  • Food prices increased 1.1 percent, down from a 4.7 percent increase for the year to September 2011. This lower increase is partly due to the 2.2 percent rise in food prices in October 2010, when the rate of goods and services tax (GST) rose from 12.5 to 15 percent, no longer contributing to annual movements from October 2011 onwards.
