Food Price Index: May 2017

Monthly change

Food prices rose 2.4 percent in the May 2017 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices rose 1.6 percent.

In May 2017 compared with April 2017:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 8.2 percent (up 6.6 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 2.3 percent.
  • Grocery food prices rose 1.9 percent (up 2.2 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 1.0 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.3 percent.

Annual change

Food prices increased 3.1 percent in the year to May 2017.

In May 2017 compared with May 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices increased 14.0 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices increased 0.6 percent.
  • Grocery food prices increased 1.7 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices decreased 1.0 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 2.1 percent.

Key average prices

  • A kilogram of tomatoes was $8.03 in May 2017, compared with $5.54 in April 2017 and $6.00 in May 2016.
  • A kilogram of lettuce was $10.56 in May 2017, compared with $6.21 in April 2017 and $4.23 in May 2016.
