Monthly change

Food prices fell 0.5 percent in the May 2016 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices fell 0.5 percent.

In May 2016 compared with April 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 2.6 percent (down 3.7 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 0.2 percent.
  • Grocery food prices showed no overall change (up 0.3 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.2 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.1 percent.

Annual change

Food prices decreased 0.3 percent in the year to May 2016.

In May 2016 compared with May 2015:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 5.8 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 3.5 percent. .
  • Grocery food prices fell 1.8 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.6 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 1.7 percent.

 Average prices

  • The average price for a 200g avocado was $4.48 in May 2016, compared with $1.64 in May 2015.
  • The average price for a kilo of kumara was $3.46 in May 2016, compared with $5.01 in May 2015.
