Food Price Index: May 2011

Highlights

In May 2011 compared with April 2011:

  • Food prices rose 0.5 percent. 
  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 1.6 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices rose 1.2 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 0.9 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices were unchanged.
  • Grocery food prices fell 0.2 percent.

From May 2010 to May 2011:

  • Food prices increased 7.4 percent. This includes a 2.2 percent rise in food prices in October 2010, when the rate of goods and services tax (GST) rose from 12.5 to 15 percent.
