Food Price Index: June 2016

Monthly change

Food prices rose 0.4 percent in the June 2016 month. However, after seasonal adjustment food prices fell 0.9 percent.

In June 2016 compared with May 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 4.2 percent (down 5.1 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.2 percent.
  • Grocery food prices fell 0.7 percent (down 0.7 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices rose 0.5 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.2 percent.

Annual change

Food prices decreased 0.5 percent in the year to June 2016.

In June 2016 compared with June 2015:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 2.0 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.9 percent.
  • Grocery food prices fell 2.3 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.8 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 1.6 percent.

 Key average prices

  • The average price for a 200g avocado was $4.61 in June 2016, up from $1.88 in June 2015.
  • The average price for 1kg of mild cheddar was $7.68 in June 2016, down from $9.12 in June 2015.
