Monthly change

Food prices fell 0.6 percent in the February 2016 month. After seasonal adjustment, food prices rose 0.2 percent.

In February 2016 compared with January 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 2.6 percent (down 0.4 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.5 percent.
  • Grocery food prices fell 0.3 percent (down 0.3 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 0.7 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.1 percent.

Annual change

Food prices decreased 0.5 percent in the year to February 2016.

In February 2016 compared with February 2015:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 1.4 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices showed no change.
  • Grocery food prices fell 1.9 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.5 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 2.0 percent.

 Average prices

  • The average price for a kilogram of porterhouse steak was $29.37 in February 2016, compared with $24.97 in February 2015.
  • The average price of the cheapest available 2 litres of blue-top milk was $3.29 in February 2016, compared with $3.62 in February 2015.
  • The average price for 100 grams of instant coffee was $5.71 in February 2016, compared with $6.28 in February 2015.
