Monthly change

Food prices rose 0.6 percent in August 2017. After seasonal adjustment, food prices rose 0.2 percent.

In August 2017 compared with July 2017:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices rose 3.3 percent (down 0.9 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.2 percent.
  • Grocery food prices rose 0.3 percent (up 0.8 percent after seasonal adjustment).
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.2 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices rose 0.4 percent.

Annual change

Food prices increased 2.3 percent in the year to August 2017.

In August 2017 compared with August 2016:

  • Fruit and vegetable prices increased 5.5 percent.
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices increased 0.6 percent.
  • Grocery food prices increased 2.8 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices decreased 1.4 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices increased 2.3 percent.

 

Key average prices

  • A kilogram of potatoes was $2.12 in August 2017, compared with $1.94 in July 2017, and $1.63 in August 2016.
  • A cheapest available 500g block of butter was $5.39 in August 2017, compared with $4.88 in July 2017, and $3.32 in August 2016.
