Food Price Index: August 2011

Highlights

In August 2011 compared with July 2011:

  • Food prices fell 1.3 percent. 
  • Fruit and vegetable prices fell 5.9 percent, reflecting lower tomato, banana, and lettuce prices. 
  • Meat, poultry, and fish prices fell 0.9 percent.
  • Non-alcoholic beverage prices fell 1.3 percent.
  • Grocery food prices fell 0.3 percent.
  • Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food prices were unchanged.

From August 2010 to August 2011:

  • Food prices increased 6.6 percent. This includes a 2.2 percent rise in food prices in October 2010, when the rate of goods and services tax (GST) rose from 12.5 to 15 percent.
