Price indexes

Price indexes measure the change in price for a fixed ‘basket’ of goods and services between two time periods. This change is often called inflation.

We collect prices for a wide variety of goods and services that we use in a range of price indexes for a variety of economic sectors.

Business Price Indexes
This quarterly release combines the producers price index and capital goods price index from 19 May 2015.

Capital Goods Price Index 
This quarterly release provides information on the change in the general price level of fixed capital assets.
We discontinued this release in May 2015 and replaced it with Business Price Indexes. 

Consumers Price Index
This quarterly release provides information on the price change of goods and services purchased by private New Zealand households.

Food Price Index 
This monthly release provides information on the rate of price change of food and food services purchased by households.

Household living-costs price indexes
This quarterly release provides information on the rate of price change for goods and services purchased by select household groups, providing a measure of inflation for sub-sections of the population.

Labour Cost Index (All Labour Costs)
This annual release provides information on movements in base salary and ordinary time wage rates, and overtime wage rates. It also measures movements in the following non-wage costs: annual leave and statutory holidays, superannuation, ACC employer premiums, and medical insurance.

Labour Cost Index (Salary and Wage Rates)
We discontinued this release in 2015 and replaced it with Labour Market Statistics.

Labour Market Statistics
This quarterly release contains information on movements in base salary and ordinary time wage rates, and overtime wage rates. It also contains information about New Zealand’s official employment and unemployment statistics. Replaced the Labour Cost Index (Salary and Wage Rates), Quarterly Employment Survey, and Household Labour Force Survey releases in 2015. 

Overseas Trade Indexes
These quarterly releases provide information on changes in the levels of both prices and volumes of imports and exports of merchandise trade to and from New Zealand.

Producers Price Index
This release provides information on the change in the general level of prices for the productive sector of New Zealand. The Farm Expenses Price Index is included from the March 2014 quarter.
We discontinued this release in May 2015 and replaced it with Business Price Indexes.
