For people in the Ngāti Tama iwi grouping and living in New Zealand on 5 March 2013:

Population

  • 2,151 people, or less than 1 percent of the total population of Māori descent were in the Ngāti Tama iwi grouping, a decrease from 2,340 people in 2006. In 2001, there were 1,764 people in the Ngāti Tama iwi grouping.

Where iwi grouping members live

  • 62.4 percent lived in main urban areas (populations of 30,000 or more). In comparison, 65.6 percent of the total population of Māori descent lived in main urban areas.
  • 82.8 percent or 1,782 people were living in the North Island and 16.9 percent or 363 people were living in the South Island. Less than 1 percent or 3 people were living in the Chatham Islands.
  • The most common region(s) in which people in the Ngāti Tama iwi grouping lived was the Taranaki Region (19.7 percent or 423 people). The second and third most common regions were the Wellington Region (18.7 percent or 402 people) and Auckland Region (11.9 percent or 255 people).
  • 57 people stated they were living overseas five years ago.

  • For people in the Ngāti Tama iwi grouping, 20.9 percent affiliated with one iwi within the grouping, while 79.1 percent affiliated with more than one iwi, either within the grouping or outside the grouping.
